Monday Fun-Day – Press Secretary Gibbs Watches SpongeBob not Alien Invaders
I confess, it can't be all law all the time. This morning I was perusing the Politico when I saw this hilarious questioning of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. How often do you get to see Gibbs squirm while being asked what the President thinks of a television show that arguably likens his administration to alien invaders?
It was easily the weirdest question asked of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs on Friday: What does the president think of a new science-fiction show on ABC?
"Robert, I have one question and one clarification," asked a reporter. "First, the new TV series on ABC, "V," a lot of people are talking about how this show draws very strong —"
Gibbs quickly interrupted. "I got to tell you — I'm going to start with this: I don't want to give anybody the impression I have time to watch anything other than what most of you all do each night. So I can't even tell you what that is or what it's about. If that makes me fairly un-cool, I tend to watch more 'SpongeBob' than 'V.'"
What is "V"? It's ABC's revamped version of the 1980s science fiction hit miniseries. The premise? An advanced alien species visit Earth peacefully, but turn out to have more sinister motives.
"You haven't seen the news stories about how this show compares your administration to the alien invaders?" the reporter persisted. "Seriously, really, you haven't heard about it?"
"He couldn't admit it if he had," Gibbs said to laughter. "Fourteen million people watch it, and the show —"
Gibbs: "And clearly, me not being one of them."
The reported continued, asking Gibbs to find out whether President Barack Obama has a reaction to accusations that the show is attempting to be a metaphor for Obama's presidency – and not a positive one. The reporter said that the show compares Obama "to a space alien."
Gibbs said that would "be one of the least worst things he's been called today."
