Obomination: Hypocrisy of Obama and His Party in the Senate
Last week, 34 Senators wrote a letter
to Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), pointing out the Democrat’s hypocrisy with regard
to the permissibility of presidential recess appointments during Senate pro
forma sessions. The letter charges Obama and the Democrats in
the Senate with “undermin[ing] the constitutional authority of the Senate in
order to serve a political objective.”
As previously discussed here
and here
on the Republican Lawyer Blog, Obama appointed Richard Cordray, Terrence Flynn,
Sharon Block, and Richard Griffin during the Senate’s pro forma session – showing
that Obama as President completely disregarded the Senate’s constitutional
authority to advise and consent.
The letter from 35 Senators points out that Democrat Leader Harry
Reid, who now has been defending Obama’s recess appointments, was in reality, “indisputably
the author of what became the routine use pro forma sessions to prevent recess
appointments.” The letter declares asserts
that Majority Leader Reid “believe[s] the importance of preserving Senate’s
constitutional role in the nomination and appointment process varies depending
on the political party of the President.”
Speaking on the Senate floor, Lamar Alexander declared
Obama’s approach means that the Senate could recess for lunch and come back to
find “the country has a new Supreme Court justice.”
The Senators are going to the judiciary with Obama’s breach
of constitutional authority. Senator
Lamar Alexander (R-TN) said,
“We will file amicus curiae briefs in all of the appropriate courts, and we
will take this issue to the most important court in the land and that is the
court of the American people on Election Day.”
