On Thursday, January 19th, 2017, over 350 Republican lawyers from around the country gathered together in preparation for the then-President-elect’s inauguration. The event served as a celebration of the sweeping Republican victories across the country, and also highlighted the hard work that many of those in attendance had selflessly contributed to the successful election season. Over the course of the three-course meal in the Four Seasons hotel ballroom in Washington, D.C., attendees heard from keynote speakers Don McGahn, incoming White House Counsel; and Mayor Rudy Giuliani, President Trump’s transition advisor.

Incoming White House Counsel Don McGahn explained what it was like to work as the President’s legal counsel during the primary and the general campaigns, and explained his excitement to work with some of the best legal minds within the Administration. He also expressed his gratitude for those who assisted the RNLA’s efforts to help ensure that last November’s election was open, fair, and honest. At the luncheon, the RNLA formally announced that at the National Policy Conference in May, he will be given the RNLA’s highest honor, the Ed Meese Award. McGahn expressed his gratitude on receiving the RNLA’s highest award, mentioning that General Meese was one of his greatest mentors.

Mayor Giuliani regaled the crowd with tales from his time on the campaign trail with President Trump and praised him as being the hardest working candidate he had the pleasure to work alongside. Mayor Giuliani also expressed his excitement for the country with the election of President Trump and proclaimed, “It’s like we’ve been delivered from the wilderness. And boy, we were right on the cliff.”

In addition to the usual pleasant company that is found at RNLA events, the luncheon featured other notable attendees: Senator Todd Young; Congresswoman Susan Brooks; Congressman Luke Messer; FEC Commissioners Lee Goodman and Caroline Hunter; Chairman of the Republican Attorneys General Association and Louisiana Attorney General Luther Strange; and Leslie Rutledge, Attorney General of Arkansas.

The RNLA would like to thank the following sponsors of the Lawyers’ Inaugural Luncheon: Dan Backer, DB Capitol Strategies; LeClairRyan; Wilmer Hale LLP; Election CFO; Foley & Lardner LLP; GreenbergTraurig; Husch Blackwell; King & Spalding; Venable LLP; BakerHostetler; Ice Miller; Jared Michael; Law Offices of Mark Foster; White & Case LLP; and Wiley Rein LLP.
