On May 11, President Trump established the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity by executive order. The mission of the commission is to:

"Study the registration and voting processes used in Federal elections. The Commission shall be solely advisory and shall submit a report to the President that identifies . . . those laws, rules, policies, activities, strategies, and practices that enhance [and] undermine the American people's confidence in the integrity of the voting processes used in Federal elections; and those vulnerabilities in voting systems and practices used for Federal elections that could lead to improper voter registrations and improper voting, including fraudulent voter registrations and fraudulent voting."

Currently, the members of the commission are:

  • Vice President Mike Pence, Chair
  • Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, Vice Chair
  • Public Interest Legal Foundation President Christian Adams
  • Former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell
  • Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap
  • Former Arkansas State Representative David K. Dunn
  • New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner
  • Alabama Probate Judge Alan Lamar King
  • Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson
  • U.S. Election Assistance Commission Commissioner Christy McCormick
  • West Virginia County Clerk Mark Rhodes
  • Heritage Foundation Senior Legal Fellow Hans von Spakovsky

All meetings of the commission will be open to the public. The commission’s first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 19, and it will be live-streamed.

Rather predictably, the commission has been attacked before it has even started. Multiple lawsuits are currently pending, distracting the commission from its preparation and attempting to halt the commission’s work to make recommendations to improve election integrity.

The RNLA is defending the commission and its members from the critics through op-eds, blog posts, and social media posts:

  • TheRepLawyer blog posts on the commission
  • “Trump’s Commission On Election Integrity Is Long Overdue” by Ronald Hicks, RNLA Vice President for Communications
  • "The Left’s Campaign To Silence Opposing Views" by Michael Thielen, RNLA Executive Director
  • “The Left’s Crusade Against Honest Elections” by Michael Thielen, RNLA Executive Director
  • “A Welcome Push To Restore Integrity To Our Elections” by Ronald Hicks, RNLA Vice President for Communications

The RNLA maintains a page with news on election integrity issues. The Heritage Foundation’s database of vote fraud convictions now contains 848 criminal convictions for vote fraud. The Public Interest Legal Foundation recently released a study of Virginia that found 5,556 noncitizens had been removed from the voter registration rolls since 2011, and 1,852 of those noncitizens had voted. These resources are a small part of the data that shows how desperately the commission’s study and recommendations are needed to help states protect the integrity of their elections.
