The past few months have been exciting as the Trump Administration begins its important work of restoring respect for the rule of law to our federal government. Justice Gorsuch took his place on the Supreme Court and has already shown that he will be a justice in the mold of Justice Antonin Scalia, as President Trump promised. Many RNLA members, leaders, and friends have joined the administration, and many more will begin serving our country in the coming months.

The mainstream media, liberals, and Democrats are using every opportunity to oppose President Trump and the work of the Trump administration. Once reliable, if liberal leaning, news outlets have published stories relying on single, anonymous sources without verifying the reported facts. Several weeks ago, CNN was forced to retract a false story that Trump Transition Team executive committee member Anthony Scaramucci wrongfully discussed lifting sanctions in a meeting with Russian representatives. CNN even changed its policy on reporting on Russia in response to the false report. In the wake of a Bernie Sanders supporter opening fire on Republican members of Congress’ softball practice, the New York Times repeated the long-discredited, defamatory narrative blaming Sarah Palin for the 2011 shooting of then-Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Republicans must be vigilant in verifying what we read in the news and skeptical of the sensational stories and headlines that populate our news feeds.

On August 4-5, the RNLA will host its annual National Election Law Seminar in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This year’s conference will feature an address by RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and by other prominent conservative and Republican leaders. The early bird registration rate is available through this Friday, and the hotel room discount is available through Friday, July 21.

In May, the RNLA hosted its National Policy Conference. The entire day was broadcast by C-SPAN, and you can find more details here.

RNLA leaders now write an opinion column in the Daily Caller every Thursday. Recently, RNLA Vice President for Communications Ron Hicks wrote “A Welcome Push To Restore Integrity To Our Elections,” RNLA Executive Director Michael Thielen wrote “FEC’s Commissioner, Weintraub, Flagrantly Abusing Power” and “The Left’s Crusade Against Honest Elections,” and RNLA Vice President for Election Education David Warrington wrote “Jeff Sessions’ Conduct Has Been Beyond Reproach.” Follow the RNLA on Twitter, like the RNLA on Facebook, or subscribe to TheRepLawyer blog to receive updates on these columns and other important news.

Democrats are obstructing President Trump whenever possible, including blocking and delaying judicial and Department of Justice nominees. They delayed Rachel Brand’s nomination as Assistant Attorney General for months, just to play politics, even though Ms. Brand is a widely respected, highly praised, and well-qualified attorney. No Democratic senators have returned a blue slip for any of President Trump’s judicial nominees. Click here for more information on the current status of judicial nominations.

Democrats are also fighting the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity through the media, resistance, and lawsuits. For the latest on the commission’s important work, click here.

The RNLA has started a women’s networking initiative, hosting special events for female attorneys in the Washington, D.C., area. Women leaders have always played a vital role in the RNLA, including our current Chair Kimberly Reed and many women members of the Board of Governors and chapter leaders, and we are grateful that Brenda Hankins is leading this effort to connect female attorneys.

While this is an off-year for federal elections, there are important state, local, and special elections to watch. Virginia, New Jersey, and New York City all have races this fall, and the RNLA will host election law trainings for attorneys who would like to volunteer to ensure those elections are open, fair, and honest. Watch your email for more details.
